History

Air India has the OACI code: AIC and the IATA code: AI.

Over the past two years, Air India has undergone significant transformations under the ownership of Tata Group. In 2022, Tata Group acquired Air India for $2.4 billion and initiated a five-year transformation plan called Vihaan to revitalize the airline’s reputation and expand its global footprint. As part of this turnaround, Air India placed significant aircraft orders.

In December 2024, the airline confirmed an order for 100 Airbus aircraft, including 90 A320 family aircraft and 10 A350 wide-body aircraft, adding to an earlier mega order of 470 Airbus and Boeing aircraft.

These developments reflect Air India’s commitment to revitalize its operations, expand its global footprint and improve connectivity between India and key international destinations, including Spain.

Air India was offering direct flights between Delhi and Madrid until the pandemic. It now offers connections with its subsidiaries KLM and Air France via Frankfurt International Airport (FRA), and Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG.

As of April 2024, Air India flies to a total of 84 destinations, including 44 domestic destinations and 40 international destinations in 37 countries across five continents around the world. Its main hub is located at Indira Gandhi International Airport, New Delhi, and has secondary hubs at Kempegowda International Airport, Bangalore and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, Mumbai.

Air India operates some of the longest non-stop flights in the world.
