In Spain, the VAT refund process for travelers is digital, and is processed through the Tax Agency's DIVA system. This system is the only valid system for VAT refunds for purchases made in Spain by foreign travelers.
Requirements to apply for the VAT refund:
- The applicant must not be a resident of the EU (nor reside in the Canary Islands, Ceuta or Melilla).
- The purchases must be of a personal nature, i.e. not for commercial purposes.
- Must leave the European Union within 3 months from the date of purchase of the goods.
When you make your purchases in Spain, ask the seller for the Tax Free electronic form (called "documento electrónico de reembolso" or "DER"). Without this form you will not be entitled to a VAT refund. See the explanatory document in Spanish. See the explanatory document in Spanish.
When you go to the airport to leave the country, and always before checking in your baggage, you must electronically validate the electronic VAT refund documents for your purchases. For this purpose, the DIVA screens located in the check-in areas of the airport will assist you in this process.
For this electronic stamping process you will need:
- Your passport.
- Your purchase invoices and the DIVA form.
- The merchandise for which you are requesting the return. Without the merchandise there is no stamp.
- Your boarding pass or airline ticket with your travel route.
This is a digital process and you will NOT receive any document with the result of the validation. However, you will be able to know at any time the status of the processing by consulting the CSV number (secure verification code) from the Tax Agency Headquarters official website.
Operation of the DIVA touch screens
- Select your language.
- Pass the barcode of the form through the optical reader.
- The system can give two results:
- The tax-free DIVA form is stamped. The processing is completed.
- The DIVA tax-free form cannot be validated. In this case, you must go to the invoice visa office of the Guardia Civil located next to the screens.
Once the electronic validation of the DIVA has been completed, you can request your refund at a Tax Free company located in the boarding area (refund subject to commission). You can also request your refund at the store where you made your purchases before leaving the country, if you schedule it in advance.
Location:
VAT refund machines, or DIVA screens, are located at the following airport locations:
Terminal T4, floor 1, boarding area.
Terminal T4, floor 1, boarding area.

Some people have reported bag thefts (by tugging or carelessness) when managing the TAX FREE reimbursement at the airport machines. Thieves take advantage of the fact that passengers are concentrating on the handling and steal the bags, fleeing. Do not be careless and keep an eye on your belongings at all times.
If your DIVA form could not be validated from the automatic system, or you have to validate forms for purchases made in other EU countries, you should go to the Guardia Civil invoice visa office located next to the DIVA screens.
